My name is Nafees Bin Zafar. I develop techniques and software for the visual effects industry. I am originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh, by way of Charleston, South Carolina. Though I usually call Los Angeles home.
I have worked on many films over the past 16 years such as 2012, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and Kung Fu Panda 3. In 2008 I won an Academy Award for my work on pioneering digital fluid effects now used throughout the visual effects industry. In 2015 I received an Academy Award for the development of the Drop large-scale destruction simulation system.
I believe in sharing research, and building strong ties between academia and industry. I have served on juries for SIGGRAPH, and have been a Program Chair for the Digital Production Symposium. I have also served as a member of the Digital Imaging Technology Subcommittee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which investigates groundbreaking technical contributions to the film industry for Academy Awards.
